3D Viewer can post a file to the Remix 3D website, open it in Paint 3D, or send it to the Print 3D app (formerly 3D Builder) for 3D printing. You’d be surprised how many 3D models you can find on the internet are broken in some way. Modern slicers are pretty good at repairing the models without you even noticing. Nevertheless, sooner or later you’ll encounter a model with problems. The symptoms may vary. You might notice random top/bottom layers in the middle of the model, where it clearly should be just infill. Or missing features of the model. Sometimes the slicer will skip a few layers of your model. Sometimes just give up and produce a mess of seemingly random infills and perimeters. You may also encounter these problems when you try to edit the models (check our tutorial on how to stylize 3D models).

As an example, we’ll be using the Waving Groot model by Byambaa. The model looks wonderful. However, it has a dozen of errors. And in this case, the author decided to license the model under Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs, so anybody who repairs the model is not allowed to re-upload the fixed version. This is the perfect example where the only solution is to repair to model by yourself.

Builder

There are several ways to repair a 3D model. You’ll find that where sometimes one works and the other doesn’t, with a different model, different tools will successfully repair it. We’ll only focus on solutions that are free and easy to use:

  • Microsoft STL repair – online service
  • Meshmixer
    • Auto-repair – easy to use, but doesn’t always work
    • Make solid – that almost always works, but has its downsides
  • 3D Builder – really easy to use and great tool, but only for Windows

Microsoft STL repair (formerly Netfabb)

Microsoft’s online solution to STL repairing. Uploading a file to a site and downloading back the repaired version? Can’t get much easier than that, right? Here’s the catch:

  1. You need a Microsoft account to be able to log-in to the service
  2. When you upload your STL to Microsoft STL repair service, you agree that Microsoft and it’s partners may use, modify or display your model. The definition in Terms of use is pretty vague, and it’s up to you to consider whether this matters or not.
  3. Your repaired file will not be in .STL format, but in .3MF

Microsoft 3d Builder Online

Converting .3MF file to .STL is easy. But the programs used for that conversion can repair models as well. And at that point, it’s questionable what’s the point of using Microsoft repair service in the first place. Well, whether you like it or not, Microsoft’s repair service can sometimes fix a model that other programs struggle with. The easiest way to co convert .3MF to .STL is probably in Meshmixer. Just drag and drop your file inside the Meshmixer window, select File -> Export (CTRL+E) and pick STL as the file format (STL binary or STL ASCII).

We’ve been using Meshmixer in our previous tutorials and we’ll continue to do so. It’s free, easy to use, and powerful software for editing and repairing 3D models. It’s available for both Windows and Mac (no Linux support though). Developed by Autodesk, it includes features like plane cuts, hollowing, adding custom supports and much more. In your typical workflow, it will fit as a step between creating/downloading model and slicing. You can download Meshmixer here.

There are (at least) two ways to try and repair models in Meshmixer. The first one is by selecting Analysis -> Inspector. If your model contains holes, a blue marker will point at it. From the drop-down menu on the left side, you can select three different hole filling methods. Their names a fairly self-explanatory (Minimal fill, Flat fill, Smooth fill) and you’ll have to experiment with them. Different methods will work better with different models. Magenta markers point at disconnected or very small parts of the model, these will simply be deleted. And red markers show “non-manifold” geometry that cannot exist in real world. Which is obviously a problem since we want to 3D print the model. If you click on one of the markers, Meshmixer will try to fix the problem. However, if the marker turns black, it did not succeed and the problem persists. By click Auto Repair All Meshmixer will attempt to fix all of the problems. However, this does not always work. And so it’s time to use a bigger hammer!

You’ll find this option under Edit -> Make Solid. In our previous article we used Make solid to create blocky or low poly versions of your model. This should give you a good idea of how destructive it is. Meshmixer will completely recalculate all triangles of the model, problematic or not. This will always repair any problems that the model might have had. But it degrades the quality of the model and increases the file size (quite a bit actually). The trick is to use high enough resolution that the quality decrease won’t be visible on the 3D print.

  1. From the drop-down menu choose Accurate as Solid Type. You may also choose Sharp Edge Preserving if you really want to keep edges really sharp. Again, Autodesk is pretty good at choosing self-explanatory names 🙂
  2. Use the Solid accuracy and Mesh density sliders to make the new re-meshed model look as close to the original as possible (usually, you’ll have to increase the default values).
  3. Hit Update to see the changes. Depending on the complexity of your model, this may take some time.
  4. Keep in mind the scale of your model. You might not like the small triangles on the edges of the model, but if they’re small enough and well beyond the resolution of any FDM 3D printer, you don’t have to worry about them.
  5. When you’re done, Accept the edit
  6. Choose File -> Export. Choose STL as the file format.

3D Builder

If you’re using Windows 10 (or 8) you’re in luck (at least in this case ;-)! Microsoft added an excellent app for editing models for 3D printing to the Microsoft Store called 3D Builder. Sadly, but for obvious reasons, it’s available only for Windows. When you open a model in 3D builder you first have to choose import units (typically millimeters). After that, if your model has any errors, the 3D Builder will put a red frame on the bottom of the model and offer you a one-click solution with a pop-up in the lower right corner. Just click on the repair box and that’s it. You can now save the model as STL. 3D builder has .3MF set as default output file format, so don’t forget to change it.

After you successfully repair your STL, the workflow is the same as if the model wasn’t broken in the first place. Import it to your favorite slicer, export gcode, upload it to the SD card, and you are ready to print.

Paint 3D is a raster graphics and 3D modeling application which is a refresh of Microsoft Paint. It is one of several 3D modeling and printing applications introduced or improved with the Windows 10 Creators Update, along with View 3D, Windows Mixed Reality, Holograms, and 3D Builder.

Developed by Microsoft's Lift London studio[2], Paint 3D incorporates features of the Microsoft Paint and 3D Builder applications to combine a lightweight hybrid 2D-3D editing experience that allows users to pull in a variety of shapes from the app, their personal computer, and Microsoft's OneDrive service.

In May 2016, a leaked Universal Windows Platform version of Microsoft Paint was revealed with a new hybrid ribbon-sidebar interface and some support for 3D objects. Microsoft rolled out a dummy app called Newcastle through the Windows Store to replace installations of the leaked build.[3][4]

In October 2016, a user on Twitter leaked out official tutorial videos of an upcoming version of Paint for Windows 10. The video showcases new features such as a completely redone interface with pen input in mind, as well as the ability to create and modify basic 3D models.[5]

Microsoft 3d Builder Download

The Universal Windows Platform version was officially announced and released during a Surface event on October 26, 2016 as part of the keynote presentation on the Windows 10 Creators Update.[6] The app was made available for Windows 10 users with a build number of 14800 or higher and coexists with the previous version of Paint as of build 14955.[7] Microsoft revealed a community website[8] for sharing Paint drawings, with a focus on the new 3D formats. In addition to the 3D format, this version introduced the ability to save transparent pixels in 2D drawings, clip art stickers, background removal, the ability to download and import community drawings from within the app, UWP sharing contracts silhouette ribbon icons, new flat sidebar icons a blue-purple in-app theme, the ability to change the backdrop, and informational videos. One of the videos establishes unambiguously that Paint 3D is the evolution of Microsoft Paint, showing older versions of Paint from Windows editions 1, 3.1, Vista, and 10.

Paint 3D was briefly made a replacement to Microsoft Paint, in Windows builds 14971 and 14986. However, due to complaints about the new interface and features missing in Paint 3D, the Windows team decided to allow the two apps to coexist.

Over the course of development the stickers subsections were rearranged, new stickers were added, additional classic 2D shapes were added, an option was added to disable the welcome screen, the scrollbars were improved, the ability to resize the canvas with a mouse was added, and stickers were enabled to stick automatically if the user switched to a different activity without clicking the stamp button.

Windows Insider chief Dona Sarkar confirmed that a Windows 10 Mobile version of Paint 3D has entered the alpha stage of development.[9]

In the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update an updated version of Paint 3D was released in Windows Store. It allowed users to directly Upload or Download models from Remix 3D.

Paint 3D's most heavily promoted features are related to its support for 3D objects. Paint 3D provides 3D stock people, animals, geometric shapes, text, and doodles. Users can rotate objects, adjust the placement of 3D object in all three dimensions, and apply 2D objects as stickers to 3D objects. The canvas itself can be rotated in 3D space or hidden, but it cannotbe rotated while the user is editing.

It includes many of the 2D objects from Microsoft Paint and new colorful 'stickers', which are functionally similar to traditional 2D shapes, and patterns that can be applied to the background and 3D objects. 2D text is available, as well as 3D text.

Animations can be saved in 2D and 3D formats and shared using the Windows Share feature or OneDrive (purposed as a user-generated warehouse, replacing Remix3d.com). Because of these features, Microsoft included a license agreement that appears when the app is launched.

The user is greeted with a welcome screen with tutorials, information about Paint 3D, and options for opening or starting a project. The screen can be disabled and reenabled.

Like its predecessor, Paint 3D supports multiwindowing. Both support jumplists, but only Paint 3D displays 3D objects in its jumplist (other picture types are permissible).

Reception[edit]

Paint 3D was praised for the new features it introduced, its role in Windows 10's evolving 3D support, the new user interface, improved stylus support, and a level of innovation not seen in the development of Microsoft Paint. The app has gone on to be used in peripheral gaming, finding a niche in game design as well as general gameplay.[10][11][12][13]

However, users criticized it on the Internet and in the Feedback Hub for lacking some of the features of Microsoft Paint, lack of available 3D tools, and not being as ergonomically intuitive with a mouse and keyboard, particularly in the earliest iterations of the app.[14][15]
